Boys boys boys
I’ve hung out with guys for the past four days in a row. And I love it. Male friendships are such meaningful and neccessary parts of a girl’s life, and I’m glad that they now seem to be in fairly regular supply for me.

Batman
Heath Ledger was unreal. I’ve not seen any other movies that were released for the next Oscar season, but it is difficult to imagine someone giving a more magnificent performance. Not to be trite, but what a loss for the acting community. The Batman growl-voice was, indeed, obnoxious, as I think was mentioned in the Times critique. The boat scene was fantastic. Chicago looked lovely. ...

The Perfect Summer Cocktail
Inspired by the watermelon salad at Mana on Division, I made a watermelon cocktail last night with C + M. It was random and a total guess, but it was pretty damn delicious: very fruity and summery, but not cloyingly sweet or “candy-like.” Rough recipe, so that I remember vaguely how to make it again. For three glasses: Take approximately 2 1/2 to 3 cups of watermelon chunks...

Another reason to abolish the electoral college
We should get rid of the electoral college for oh-so-many reasons. I was pondering it today, and one other swell reason is to create more of an impetus for citizen participation. People talk a lot about how Americans are so apathetic, about how young people don’t like to be engaged or active in the political process. I’d like to do some work for the Obama campaign, but knowing that I...

capucha: A very touching story about a 98 years old man who is losing his memory, witnessed by his photographer son. This is stunningly beautiful. I have lately had some reminders of what a gift it is to have access to photography, be interested in photography, and be rather good at photography. What I do can mean something. One of the reasons I’m so excited to quit my job is so I can...

Nice reminders
Fact: I have a tendency to catastrophize. Although I think I’ve gotten much better at it. At the beginning of July, I found out that one of my October clients cancelled her wedding. I was a bit stressed about this, as my October is light (turned down another October one since my September is heavy and had the other soon after…so suddenly down to just one wedding). Two days after I got...

I’ve been thinking about it more, and I do think I might want to move, specifically to a loft-ish space. If you hear of one or see one that is not ungodly expensive (my price tolerance is more lenient than the average bear, I’d say…I know how much I have to spend to get a loft here), please let me know. Pretty much anywhere between Logan Square and Pilsen (not ready for...

I hate new year’s resolutions. I do, however, like anyday resolutions. New Resolution for Olivia: Travel More. In the year of August 2008-December 2009*, I vow to travel to at least the following places: Toronto, Canada San Francisco, Calif. New York, New York Washington, D.C. Charlotte, N.C. Somewhere abroad I used to be so travelly, but it has been years since I’ve been...

Woof.
In a super stealth move, I managed to sneak a dog into my apartment one night this week. This was probably an ill-advised move in many ways, as I remember it being in ALL CAPS in my lease that NO DOGS were allowed, and also because my puppy heart strings have been going amuck ever since. She was the most lovely, well-mannered dog I have ever encountered, and she slept in my bed all night in the...

I Quit!
Well, I did it. A certain someone said she would believe it when she saw it. Well, believe, my friend. It has been done. I think I thought I would be more nervous as the last day approaches, nervous about the impending self-reliance I’d have to assume. But it turns out I’m rather spectacularly excited. Here are some things I’m thrilled about: Only having to work about 40 hours...

Hmm
I randomly flipped on House Hunters International, in which people tour three homes, weigh the pros and cons, and select one. They were in Holland for this episode, and the house they toured was 1,000 sq feet and had five bedrooms. It also has a kitchen, sitting room and bathroom. How is that possible? I have a 1.5/2 bed (small rooms) that I am guessing is around 1,000 feet, and I can’t even...

It’s Always Sunny in Phildelphia Definitely not my usual type of show, but it’s pretty damn funny and clever. It’s also nice to see Danny DeVito employed doing something age-apropropriate instead of romancing Parker Posey.

weddings
I just got back from a beautiful, beautiful wedding. It was at A New Leaf, a stupendously beautiful venue, if not a bit ironically dark (so loft-like, but so, so dark). I am not a particularly sentimental person; I don’t cry at “sweet moments,” but I almost cried three times tonight. There was nothing extraordinarily moving; I’ve seen more emotional moments at other...

What, exactly, do I do all day?
laurao: I went to a party last night and met all sorts of new, lovely, people. As people tend to do when they meet a new person, they asked me what I do. I usually say “I’m a writer.” Or perhaps when I worked at Tails, I would say “I work at a magazine.” We got in this whole conversation about being a writer versus being a journalist. I never say I’m a journalist because in my mind, that implies...
